ask a creative | how to beat the frazzle

Apr 9, 2014

Hello friends! It's nice to meet you. I'm Kelsey and I blog and design over at Pinegate Road. About nine months ago I made the transition from grad school to full-time employment which concurrently moved me across the country from Savannah, Georgia to Cleveland, Ohio. Between working my full-time job, freelancing, blogging, and my latest venture of becoming a puppy mommy, my life has been anything but sane. I know, I totally just did that annoying blogger thing where I told you how crazy and busy I am, and blah blah blah. There's a point. I know that you're all probably in similar predicaments. Where do you find the room to live the happy life you're working towards while you're working towards it? These past few months I've been trying out some new things that have been keeping me significantly less frazzled. Oh, and you're welcome for the Sunday night frazzled self-portrait. Hah. In the name of authenticity, that is exactly what I look like when I'm working from home on the weekends. It's glamorous, let me tell you ;)
ONE: Invest in a planner that works for you. I've been using the Day Designer for two years now, and I can tell you right now it has hands-down been the best thing I've picked up to avoid the frazzle of life. It's designed specifically for the creative entrepreneur, and it allows you to take each day in stride and feel accomplishment even when you might not have hit all the items on your to-do list. Along with keeping a planner, I keep pretty notebooks in my bags, on my desks, and just about everywhere in my house. Having something around to write down whatever I'm thinking at that moment has helped me not lose sight of all that's going on. I often rip out important pages and put them in my Day Designer if they pertain to something on my to-do list.
TWO: Dear Mother Earth, I'm so sorry for this one. A couple weeks ago I had this melt down. I live in a one bedroom apartment alone, without a dishwasher. At the end of each day, the very last thing I wanted to do was dishes. I've been battling a disease where I pretend dishes don't build up, and that they will one day magically appear back in my cabinets all clean and dry. Suffice it to say, my delusions get the better of me and after a week I'll come home and have a mild panic attack about the state of my apartment. I feel guilty that as a single person I can't even manage the duty of washing dishes. To cut out this guilt, I've spent two weeks turning to paper plates. Game changer! No mess, and I come home ready and happy to be productive. Does anyone else just get in a sad mood when their place isn't clean? Until I move and get a dishwasher, this is just going to have to be my method in the name of sanity.
THREE: Trying to keep healthy when I spend lunch breaks driving to and from work to take my pup out to pee has been hard. I've been stocking up on bags of organic apples, and I throw a couple in my purse every morning. When things get busy, I know I have something that will hold me over until I can make a healthy meal. They can take a punch, so I don't care about something exploding in my bag or getting too bruised like other fruit might. Puppy seems to like this trick too!
FOUR: At home, I try very hard to be intentional about the items I surround myself with. I'm a very visual person, so having things that go along with my aesthetic just puts me in a happier and more calm mood. Keeping a pretty tray with a candle and a match box will allow you to have some tranquil time in the midst of some frazzle. It's all about balance :)

I'd love to hear any of your quick tips to beat the frazzle! There's always room to buy back time and invite tranquility and relaxation into our lives. Big thanks to Kristyn for having me here today!

ask a creative | digital handwriting

Mar 26, 2014

Hello lovely Milk & Crown readers! This is Corina from Cocorrina. I was over the moon when Kristyn asked me to participate in her Ask A Creative series, and I knew right away what i should share with you. For the past month, I’ve received quite a few emails asking about my handwriting, and what settings do I use. So I thought it was a lovely opportunity to show you exactly how I do it.

There are quite a lot of different ways to create a handwriting brush. First of all, you will need to have a pen tablet attached to your computer / laptop. I’m using a Trust tablet and working on Photoshop CC.

Brush Lettering on Photoshop from Corina Nika on Vimeo.
That’s all folks! As easy as that! You can experiment a bit with the settings and play with textures and color to see what works best for your hand. Also, I’ve included a set of four brushes that I use, free to download. Simply install it! Thank you so much Kristyn for having me :)
